Our work is to establish and conserve permanent native woodland in Ireland, encouraging land regeneration and biodiversity. What inspired you to work with Hometree?
Novartis is always looking for ways to improve our carbon footprint, our green team with support from leadership doctrines a mindset that aims to continuously give back to society. This forms part of our values and behaviours so it is embedded for all associates to work on each year. This supports our strategy and aspiration to be a catalyst for positive change and a global leader in environmental sustainability.
You will not see some of the trees you are planting reach maturity, what has inspired such a long term vision?
While we may see the full benefit from planting trees now, our goal is to protect the planet for future generations. We will continue to do everything we can do to support projects such as Hometree. Our leadership offered this option to plant trees for associates each year to help offset our emissions. We are really looking forward to organising our tree planting Novartis event this year where we can show our physical support with getting more trees in the ground.
Have there been any key moments you can share about how you or your organisation decided to support a more abundant and healthier world?
We as an organisation have done a lot to help to stop climate change. Our targets are ambitious but achievable and year on year we are meeting our goals in addition to this here are some examples of what we do locally at Novartis Ireland to support a cleaner environment:
Removed all paper cups from our site (~60,000 per year),
Moved our company car fleet to FEV;
Regularly track the biodiversity of our local river as part of the citizen science program;
Arrange annual beach clean-ups for the local area and across the country where we have home based associates.
Would you like to share any key lessons life has taught you?
We believe that the power of people is our best asset, with strong leadership behind us, when we put our minds to achieving our climate goals, we can do it.
